Aerating it as appropriate is one of the secrets to having a safe and lush lawn. Sometimes, under watering or fertilizer issues, what you might believe is insects, really occurs simply because you don't aerate the soil as much as you can.

Soil compaction is an enemy of a safe, decent grass because as the top 4 in, it happens. Any of the topsoils is compacted to the point that the proper distribution of nutrients, oxygen, and water around the grassroots is stopped. You effectively open things up as you aerate the soil to make space for nitrogen and air to circulate into the soil. In high-traffic areas where individuals and pets tend to be common, rather than less visited areas of the grass, soil compaction also becomes a problem.

If your soil is to be compacted and thus in need of aeration, a very cheap and inexpensive way to find out is to take a small screwdriver out to your lawn after it has been drained and attempt to force the screwdriver down into the soil. If with absolutely no resistance at all the screwdriver goes into the dirt, so there is no compaction problem you need to be worried about. Although on the other hand, if you find it impossible to get the screwdriver into the dirt, you're going to have to aerate the soil as soon as you can.

The very good news about liquid aeration is that it's a really cheap thing to do for most yards. In fact, you can also use anything as easy as a spading fork to aerate your soil in those areas if your yard is small to medium-sized, and particularly if the compaction is limited to only a small portion of the yard. What you need to do is drive the fork tines as deep as you can into the dirt and then rock them back and forth. Do this in the field where the compaction problem arises.

The purchasing of a sod coring instrument that simply extracts small cores of soil and places them on the lawn is another very cheap option. Microorganisms from deep in the earth produce certain plugs that are left behind that may also help to decompose the thatch that might have grown in your lawn. Using a coring tool will also be useful for your yard in a variety of ways.

You should also mix seeding and aerating together if there are spots in your yard where the grass is scarce. You will need to go over the lawn six or seven times to make plenty of holes for the seed in this situation. But don't straight away add the seed. Wait roughly a month or so to first let the yard recover after the aeration.

Lawn aeration is an aspect of proper lawn maintenance that is very necessary, but sometimes ignored. But you should be able to have a stunning, safe, green lawn in no time if you follow the guidance provided above.
